Whether you are a tenant or an owner, it is essential to know where the water supply valve of your home is located. In case of a leak, this valve allows you to stop the water flow and thus limit the damage caused by flooding. In this article, we guide you step by step to quickly and easily find the water shut-off valve in your house or apartment.
What is a water supply valve?
The water supply valve, also called shut-off tap, main valve, or master valve, is a device that allows you to close the water supply circuit of a dwelling. It plays a key role in case of an accident, especially if a pipe bursts or a hose breaks. Quickly closing this valve can prevent significant material damage and save you costly repairs.
Where are water supply valves usually located?
Their location can vary depending on the type of dwelling: detached house or apartment, new or old building… However, some general trends can be identified regarding the access points to water supplies.
Detached homes
In a detached house, the water supply valve is usually located near the water meter. This is often installed outside the dwelling, but it can also be found in the basement or on the ground floor (especially in older houses). It is recommended to check with your water supplier if you are unsure of the meter’s location.
Once the meter is identified, the shut-off valve should be next to it, on one of the pipes connected to it. It may be very visible or require a bit more searching. The handle is generally circular (ball valve) or straight (gate valve).
Apartment buildings
In an apartment within a building, there are two types of water supply valves:
- Main building valve: It allows stopping the water supply to all the dwellings in the building. It is usually placed either near the main meter, located in the basement or on the ground floor, or in a technical room or a dedicated space called a "meter box."
- Individual valve for each dwelling: Each apartment also has its own shut-off valve that only affects its water supply. It is often found in wet rooms (bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room), near the main pipes.
Steps to quickly find your water shut-off valve
Step 1: Look for one or more unusual taps
Start by visually inspecting all the wet rooms in your home, looking for a tap different from those usually used for the sink, washbasin, or shower. It may have a circular or straight handle and be located on a main pipe serving these fixtures.
Step 2: Visually inspect the water meter
If you do not find the water supply valve in the wet rooms, head to your home’s water meter. You should spot, either directly on the pipe connected to the meter or very close by, a valve with a handle or wheel similar to the one described earlier.
Step 3: Follow the main water supply pipes
If you still cannot find your water access valve, take the time to inspect the main pipes of your dwelling, especially those connecting the wet rooms to each other and leading to the water meter.
Step 4: Contact your water supplier or the building manager
Finally, if despite all these tips you cannot locate your shut-off tap or if you simply want confirmation, do not hesitate to contact your water supplier or the building manager who will be able to tell you its exact location.
Knowing the location of the water supply valve is essential to act in case of an emergency related to a leak or water damage. It is therefore useful to become familiar with the plumbing elements of your home and to share this information with the household members (especially children) so that they can also react quickly if needed.
