To control the temperature and flow of water in your home, several devices have been developed, including the water mixer. In this article, we invite you to explore in depth the operation of this essential equipment for your dwelling.
What is a water mixer?
Also called a mixing tap, a water mixer is a device that allows mixing hot and cold water to provide water at an adjustable temperature. This offers the possibility to easily adjust the temperature and flow of water according to each person's preferences and needs. Water mixers are generally found for sinks, washbasins, bathtubs, and showers.
The different types of water mixers
There are mainly two broad categories of water mixers:
- Single-lever mixer: This is the most common model, made up of a single handle that allows regulating the flow and temperature of the water by controlling both sources simultaneously. The single-lever mixer is ergonomic and easy to use, making it a wise choice for modern homes and people with limited mobility. Find all our models for kitchen, shower, or even bathtub.
- Traditional mixer: Also called a double-handle tap, this model has two separate handles to control the two water sources (hot and cold) independently. Although it allows less precision in temperature adjustment, it remains appreciated for its authentic look and vintage or classic style.
How the water mixer works
To understand how a water mixer works, you need to know the different parts that make it up:
- The hot and cold water inlets, generally arranged respectively on the left and right of the device.
- The cartridges or ceramic seats, whose role is to regulate the passage of water through the pipes.
- The handle(s), intended to operate the cartridges to adjust the flow and temperature of the water.
- The spout, through which the mixed water flows to the sanitary fixture used (washbasin, bathtub, shower…).
The operating principle of a water mixer is quite simple: when the user turns the handle, the cartridges lift and let hot or cold water pass from the water inlets. The two water sources mix inside the mixer, then flow through the spout to the sanitary fixture.
How the single-lever mixer works
In the case of a single-lever mixer, its single handle is linked to a ceramic disc cartridge that allows precise control of temperature and flow. The user can adjust these settings by raising/lowering the handle (to regulate flow) and turning it left/right (to regulate temperature).
How the traditional mixer works
For a traditional mixer, the two handles are each connected to an independent cartridge. To obtain a certain flow and desired water temperature, the user must turn each handle to separately adjust the hot and cold water supply. This method requires a bit more time and sensitivity to find the right balance between the two sources, but it still meets water needs according to each person's preferences.
The benefits of a water mixer
A water mixer offers several advantages:
- Ease of use: The ability to finely adjust temperature and flow allows obtaining water suited to the specific needs of each user.
- Energy efficiency: By precisely adjusting the amount of hot water needed, energy losses are reduced, especially with a thermostatic single-lever mixer equipped with a safety cartridge that limits access to very hot water.
- Appearance: Water mixers are available in different styles, materials, and finishes, offering a wide range of choices to beautify your bathroom or kitchen space.
Easy maintenance for a long lifespan
To ensure good operation and maximum lifespan, it is advised to carry out regular maintenance of the mixer. This notably includes:
- Cleaning accessible parts (spout, handle(s)) with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive product.
- Periodic checking of seals to ensure they are not worn or damaged.
- Replacing cartridges in case of proven malfunction (leaks, difficulty adjusting…).
Now that you know how a water mixer works, do not hesitate to choose this equipment (in the single-lever form) for your home!
